‘Hide to Show‘ van Michael Beil is een performance over je eenzaam voelen in een groep. Hoe je kan synchroniseren met anderen zonder ze te zien, altijd geobserveerd voelt door anderen, jezelf wel of niet zichtbaar kan maken en hoe vervangbaar je kan zijn.
De schijnwerpers worden op de backstage geplaatst terwijl de acht muzikanten zich voor het publiek voorbereiden op het optreden, elk alleen in hun eigen kamertje. Ze spelen een paar noten, kleden zich om of dansen op de muziek in hun koptelefoon. Niet alleen de bewegingen van de muzikanten op het podium worden als muzikaal materiaal beschouwd, Beils lijst van artistieke ingrediënten omvat nu ook hun acties in de beslotenheid van de backstage-ruimte. Maar we krijgen niet alles te zien. De muzikanten verschuilen zich achter hun kostuums, gordijnen die op en neer gaan en tape-opnames van zichzelf, zodat de echte persoon toch onzichtbaar blijft. Laat je overmeesteren door een rollercoaster van beelden, muziek, 1980’s New Beat, Finse-Japanse polka’s en spetterende dansmoves.
Nadar Ensemble werd in 2006 opgericht door enkele jonge muzikanten, met als doel om hedendaagse muziek te brengen. Die naam verwijst naar de Franse schrijver, fotograaf, journalist en ballonvaarder Gaspard-Felix Tournachon, die het pseudoniem Nadar gebruikte. Cellist Pieter Matthynssens en componist Stefan Prins zijn beiden artistiek leider van het Ensemble, dat focust op werk van jonge nationale en internationale componisten.

‘Hide to Show’ by Michael Beil is a performance about feeling lonely in a group. How you can synchronise with others without seeing them, always feel observed by others, decide whether or not to make yourself visible, and how replaceable you can be.
The spotlight is placed backstage, as the eight musicians prepare for the performance in front of the audience, each alone in their own room. They play a few notes, get changed, or dance to the music in their headphones. Beil’s list of artistic ingredients encompasses not only the musicians’ movements on stage but also their actions in the privacy of the backstage area. However, we don’t get to see everything. The musicians hide behind their costumes, curtains that rise and fall, and tape recordings of themselves, so the real person remains invisible. Be overwhelmed by a rollercoaster of images, music, 1980s New Beat, Finnish-Japanese polkas, and electrifying dance moves.
Nadar Ensemble was founded in 2006 by several young musicians with the goal of performing and promoting contemporary music. The name refers to the French writer, photographer, journalist, and balloonist Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, who used the pseudonym Nadar. Cellist Pieter Matthynssens and composer Stefan Prins are both artistic directors of the ensemble, which focuses on works by young national and international composers.
