Opening van tentoonstelling van installaties van Felix Hess met performance ‘CDUEW (Componist Danst Uit Eigen Werk) door Huba de Graaff om 15.00-15.30 uur, inloop vanaf 14.30.
De Groningse kunstenaar Felix Hess (1941-2022) nam een unieke positie in tussen wetenschap en kunst. Hij studeerde wis- en natuurkunde in Groningen en deed onderzoek naar de beweging van terugkerende boemerangs. In Australië, werd hij onder meer betoverd door de groepsconcerten van kikkers. Kenmerkend voor zijn werk was een gevoeligheid voor alledaagse maar meestal onopgemerkte verschijnselen als “infrageluid”, luchtdruk en subtiele luchtstromingen. Dat resulteerde in wonderlijke, poëtische installaties die over de hele wereld zijn tentoongesteld. In Pictura zal o.a. de installatie ‘It’s in the air’ te zien zijn, een verzameling kleine vaantjes van wit rijstpapier die, perfect in evenwicht, meebewegen met de miniemste rimpeling van de lucht in de ruimte. Ook kunnen zijn fascinerende “geluidsbeestjes” worden ervaren.
In de solo-performance ‘CDUEW’ gaat componiste en geluidskunstenares Huba de Graaff in de slag gaat met haar vintage geluidsdragers uit het pre-digitale tijdperk. Zoals John Cage in zijn “Water Walk” beweegt ze langs haar oude apparaten en brengt lang verloren gewaande klankexperimenten weer tot leven. Haar performance is haar ode aan de geluidsdrager.
De installaties van Felix Hess zijn in Pictura te zien tot en met zondag 12 januari.

Opening of the exhibition featuring installations by Felix Hess with the performance ‘CDUEW (Componist Danst Uit Eigen Werk or Composer Dances to Her Own Work)’ by Huba de Graaff, at 15.00-15.30 hr, walk-in from 14.30.
The Groninger artist Felix Hess (1941-2022) held a unique position between science and art. He studied mathematics and physics in Groningen and conducted research on the movement of returning boomerangs. While in Australia, he also became fascinated by the group concerts of frogs. A hallmark of his work was a sensitivity to the everyday but unnoticed phenomena, such as “infrasound,” air pressure, and subtle currents of the air. This resulted in poetic installations full of wonder that have been exhibited worldwide. In Pictura, one of the installations on display is ‘It’s in the air’, a collection of small white rice paper flags that, while perfectly balanced, move along with the slightest ripple of air in the room. Next to this, visitors can experience Hess’s fascinating “sound critters.”
In the solo performance ‘CDUEW’ composer Huba de Graaff engages with vintage sound equipment from the pre-digital era. Like John Cage in his ‘Water Walk’, she navigates through her old devices, bringing long-lost sound experiments back to life. Her performance is an ode to the sound carrier.
Felix Hess’s installations will be on display at Pictura until Sunday, January 12.
